Pine Run’s Associate Appreciation Day
…’70s Style!

Funky patterns, platform shoes, crocheted vests, and other ’70s threads gave a hip beat to the Annual Associate Day festivities held on Friday, June 3 at Pine Run and Lakeview. The disco playlist, including tunes from The Bee Gees, KC & The Sunshine Band, Donna Summer, and Stevie Wonder, drew out the dancers while picnickers enjoyed fresh salads, grilled chicken, and a tempting ice cream bar with lots of rich and colorful toppings. Peace sign necklaces and groovy sunglasses served as cool party favors and some nimble-fingered guests indulged in classic ’70s string games – remember Cat’s Cradle and Witches’ Broom?

The presentation of associate achievement awards was fast-paced with whistles and shouts of encouragement from the crowd. Senior Director of Human Resources, Anne Bobek, presided over the afternoon ceremonies and earnestly expressed how “awesome” it is to work with colleagues and residents who “recognize and embrace” each other. She then awarded 40 certificates to associates who completed high school, college, technical training or earned a certificate in areas of study relevant to their work at Pine Run.

Rapt attention was then given to Bobek’s impassioned recitation of 12 Angel Awards – stories that described extraordinary deeds performed by associates to give aid, comfort, or joy to our residents, guests, and family members. Reaction was awed to several emotional stories: Emily Cuff’s incredible journey to Ocean City last fall with residents from The Garden.

John McKay’s disarmingly able assistance to a resident punctured by a sewing machine needle; and Tracy Mullarkey’s tender and evocative presentation of “Music and Memory” which stirred a family member to proclaim, “It brought my mother back.”

A noble story shared by Mel Wolf, a resident at Lakeview, about George Valerio, a faithful driver, justly moved the crowd: “To me, George exemplifies compassion. My little 14 year old dog got sick and I knew I had to put her down. George had taken me to an early doctor’s appointment and on the way home I told George what I had to do.

My dilemma was that family members who could have taken me were sick or away. George immediately said he would take me. He was quiet on the way to the veterinarian’s office and expressed that this situation was hard on him too because he loved my dog. When we got back to Lakeview, he asked for a picture of me and Sophie. He took the picture, his wife wrote a beautiful poem, and George came in the next day with the picture and the poem in a beautiful gold frame. When I look at this picture, I will always think of George and his wife giving me a beautiful memory.”

Finally, Sardi Zeneli, a certified nursing assistant, took home a $500 prize after his selection as the Five Star Award winner. Zeneli was the recipient of the award given in recognition of exemplifying the Make Their Day! service philosophy and living the Pine Run mission all year round. Zeneli’s favorite aspect of care giving is connecting with patients. “I was inspired to pursue nursing when my grandfather was suffering with leukemia in 2008. He did not speak English, and in the time I spent at his bedside at Doylestown Hospital, I witnessed a nurse who was able to give him comfort despite the language barrier and the complications of his illness,” recalled Zeneli. “Now I feel honored to gain the trust of vulnerable patients who need my care.”

Executive Director Cathleen Stewart championed all honorees: “It feels wonderful to applaud our Associates for their creative initiative, and to see them learning, growing, and taking pride in delivering services that are driven by a desire to make someone’s day brighter and better.”
