Grand Reopening of The Arbor at Lakeview

Grand Reopening of

The Arbor at Lakeview

Grand Reopening of The Arbor at Lakeview
Who knew dancing would be so popular for elders typically using walkers? A sense of celebration and fun moved residents to the dance floor on October 19 for the grand reopening of The Arbor, a specialized memory care wing, at Lakeview Personal Care Community that is a part of the Pine Run continuum of care.

Music, dancing, and tasty nibbles fueled the energy at the grand reopening, and hearty applause greeted Senior Administrator Barbara Dumas, RN, when she took the microphone at the close of the party. “The renovations exceeded our expectations, and I was amazed not to receive a single complaint from families or residents during the construction,” she enthused. “I feel certain the dedication of our staff, including Daniel Alonzo, Tamika Brown, and Teresa Sawyer, was a big part of the reason our transition proceeded smoothly.”

Located just a block from Doylestown Hospital, Lakeview’s specialized program in The Arbor is staffed 24 hours a day by passionate and committed caregivers who tend to just 13 residents. Individualized care and approaches to activities are elevated by creating a complete picture of resident preferences that begins with families completing a form about their loved ones’ lives called “My Life Story.” The sheet includes questions about what name the resident likes to be called, hobbies they enjoy, and how they take medications to promote more responsive bedside care.

Lakeview hosts a monthly Alzheimer’s Association support group for family caregivers. To learn more, call Maureen Riley at 215.489.5872.

Salut!

Salut!

French Riviera
The flavors of France were perfectly captured in a magical meal served at Pine Run Retirement Village on October 18. Chef Doug Runyen delivered an idyllic dining experience at every level, from French wine and cheese selections, to a tasty grilled peach salad course, and a juicy combination plate of sliced beef tenderloin and a traditional bouillabaisse featuring generous nuggets of shrimp, scallops, and clams in a saffron broth.

These theme dinners, staged in the auditorium at the Village, are special occasions that give the dining team chance to unleash creativity while residents relish sharing a unique meal with friends and exchanging travel memories.

The splendor of the tables set with ultramarine linens, sparkling wine goblets, and fragrant floral arrangements set the tone for the elegant evening event. “It’s all about the sense of adventure,” said guest Peg Wright. “The glowing centerpiece of Eiffel Tower made us imagine we were enjoying a dinner cruise on the Seine.”

French Riviera
The decadent feast concluded with a tarte tropezienne, a light, creamy dessert created in St. Tropez in the 1950s. A sweet brioche, filled with a mixture of vanilla and lemon cream, was garnished with fresh berries. The treat was made famous by glamorous Brigitte Bardot when she made the film …And God Created Woman in the 1960’s.

Lakeview Carnival is a slam dunk

Lakeview Carnival

is a slam dunk

The smell of the funnel cake was enough to draw a crowd. Add to that a surge of summer weather, and a tickle of nostalgia, to create an unbeatable day for the afternoon Carnival and Family Picnic held at Lakeview, part of the Pine Run Retirement Community in Doylestown, on Saturday, Sept. 16.

All generations stepped right up to try their luck at the dunking tank, duck pond, sand art, and other traditional amusements.

Dot Rathgeb and her daughter, Nancy DiNatale, share a smile after winning the goldfish bowl.
“It was so much fun. My daughter Nancy won a goldfish bowl when she knocked the cans down with a bean bag,” said Lakeview resident Dot Rathgeb.

“I love to see everyone give themselves over to whimsy and joy during these events,” enthused Lakeview’s Director of Life Enrichment Maureen Riley, all suited up for the dunking tank. “I was happy to be a target for the kids, and before I knew it, ‘splish-splash I was taking a bath.’”

Gail Barr shows good form at the ring toss.
Dick Lambert, attending with daughters Peg and Jackie, thought the picnic was a great success. “There is nothing I prefer more than a ‘Hairy Dog’ – a hotdog with sauerkraut – and that was on the menu.”

“Festive food is a regular treat at Lakeview,” said Senior Administrator Barbara Dumas. “Our Dining Director Sharon Smith knows the flavors everyone craves and she delivers according to theme. Plates were heaped with fried chicken and waffles, buttered corn on the cob, shrimp on a stick, and curly fries with vinegar. If folks had room for dessert today, they could help themselves to chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches or fruit salad in a waffle cone. Could a carnival be any better than that?”

All together for the very first time, Peg Lawrence mugs with her great-great-grandchildren, Destiny, Emilyn and Kaydin.

Bucks County Tour of Honor

Veterans from Pine Run and Lakeview went to Washington, D.C. on Monday, October 2nd to visit the nation’s memorials as part of the Bucks County Honor Flight.

The group, eighteen in all, left with a police escort at 4:15 AM and headed to the Park Casino to meet the charter buses taking them to Washington.

The veterans were recognized and honored as they visited the Korean, Vietnam and Lincoln Memorials, Iwo Jima, and the Air Force Memorial, all before lunch! Following lunch they enjoyed the Air Force Silent Drill Team performance and then they were off to Arlington National Cemetery to see the Changing of the Guard and Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

After the ceremony, Villager Tom Barnett was welcomed by the honor guards on duty and invited to visit quarters where service recognition plaques were mounted. “I had contacted the Sergeant of the Guards, Paul Basso, seeking permission to enter quarters that day, and it was an honor to be greeted by name and to see CPL (Corporal) Thomas Barnett 1953-1954 up on the wall. My plaque had just recently been mounted.”

Their last stop was the World War II Memorial before heading home. When they arrived back at the Park Casino our veterans were stirred by cheering crowds and marching bands. They entered the energized venue through a crowd of grateful citizens lined up to show their respect and appreciation for their service to our country. The celebratory day was capped with a festive dinner and entertainment.

Linda and Joe Hartman

Linda and Joe

Hartman

Love is a force that is forever on the side of those willing to open their hearts, overcome fear and climb in the proverbial convertible for a spirited ride together. Linda and Joe Hartman, newcomers from Legacy Oaks in Warrington, braved a blind date almost 20 years ago and found they were worthy partners for starting anew in a mid-life marriage. “We had both lost our spouses to illness, our children were grown and settling in far-flung places such as Colorado and Idaho, and after a time of recovering from what life threw our way, we emerged, still scared, but bold enough to start dancing with the future again,” said Linda.

“I had lived in Hawaii previously, and so after we were married here in Horsham, we took off and traveled to all of the Hawaiian islands on our honeymoon cruise,” recalled Joe. “We were eager to share the sites of the world together and over many years we have had wonderful trips to the Baltics, Italy, France, and other destinations abroad.”

“It was challenging for me to open the door to new experiences with Joe,” expressed Linda. “I had been playing it safe, taking one step at a time, taking refuge in my marketing and real estate career, along with an entrepreneurial housecleaning business, when I realized I wanted to plunge into new things again. I actually started taking ski lessons at age 54 so we could make the most of several ski trips Joe had planned to British Columbia and Vermont. We skied up until only a few years ago and now we enjoy other fitness pursuits offered right here on campus.” Joe, mindful of heart health, dedicates 300 minutes a week to working out, and he and Linda both treat themselves to Tai Chi and yoga classes.

Joe’s family also enjoyed skiing closer to home in the Poconos. A getaway cabin Joe built on 50 acres in Whitehaven was a treasured spot for many gatherings. “We ‘camped out’ in the cabin for a year while we waited for our home in Legacy Oaks to be built,” said Linda. “My camera captured a scary scene of a hulking black bear invading our deck one day. He seemed to be after the birdseed, but unbeknownst to me, Joe had whet his appetite by tossing our leftover pork chops out in the yard!” “Fortunately,” Joe added, “I scared him away with a few hunting rifle shots in the air.”

Content with their memories of novel adventures, Linda and Joe decided they were ready to transition to a more secure environment. Linda said it took them “about 10 minutes” to settle into life at Pine Run. They are amazed at how accommodating the associates are in every department. “We could adopt any number of the friendly staff we connect with on a daily basis, and my daughters were blown away by the bed and breakfast on campus,” noted Joe. “The tipping point for choosing Pine Run was the ownership by Doylestown Hospital and the women (Village Improvement Association – VIA) running the show was especially comforting. We feel secure in having emergency care on-site, if needed, by folks who will know us.”

Linda added, “Our new neighbors are great, and we love the flexible dining plan. Our guests delight in experiencing first-hand how everything is first class at Pine Run.”
