Pine Run Retirement Community Dedicates ‘Never Forget’ Garden to Honor Veterans

Bucks County senior living community joins nationwide movement to create a space to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served in the military

Tom Barnett stands in Pine Run’s Never Forget Garden with his daughters Lisa Barnett, Carol Rorbaugh, son-in-law Mark Rorbaugh, and Donna Blizzard.

DOYLESTOWN, PA. (November 2021): – Pine Run Retirement Community marked Veterans Day 2021 with several events, including the dedication of a “Never Forget Garden,” part of a nationwide initiative to plant gardens and place specially made markers to recognize, remember and honor U.S. veterans.

Part of the Doylestown Health network, Pine Run every year honors veterans who live at each of its locations: independent living at The Village, personal care at Pine Run Lakeview, and skilled nursing and memory care at The Pine Run Health Center. Veterans were honored at a special recognition breakfast held on Veterans Day at each location.

“From our annual veterans’ breakfasts to the veterans’ memorial at The Village to the Military Order of Pine Run, we are all committed to pausing to recognize the service and sacrifice of our Pine Run residents and associates who served in the military,” said Maria Santangelo, Executive Director of Pine Run Retirement Community. “We thank them for their dedication and devotion on Veterans Day and every day.”

This year’s Veterans Day festivities included the unveiling of the community’s new Never Forget Garden. Pine Run resident Thomas J. Barnett, a veteran, first approached Pine Run administrators about the Never Forget Garden in 2019. Barnett served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from 1953 to 1954 and is a life member of the tomb’s Society of the Honor Guard, which first proposed the nationwide Never Forget Garden project.

“The Never Forget Garden is really based on the Tomb guards’ motto,” said Barnett. “We have a motto that says, ‘A soldier never dies until he is forgotten. Tomb guards never forget.’”

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (June 2021): – Pine Run Retirement Community is deeply honored to announce that housekeeping associate Wilfredo “Willie” Macatantan has been named Staff Member of the Year by LeadingAge PA, a chapter of the national aging industry organization LeadingAge.

Pine Run Retirement Community Wins Top Prizes in Flik Hospitality’s National Gingerbread Contest

With astounding sugar creations, Bucks County senior living community captured grand prize and second prize in national gingerbread competition hosted by leading provider of corporate dining services

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (February 2021): – Pine Run Retirement Community, one of Bucks County’s leading senior living and senior care providers, is proud to announce that its talented associates have won grand prize and second prize in the Future Living category of Flik Hospitality’s national gingerbread contest.

David Fogel, senior director of dining services at Pine Run Retirement Community, stands with the prize-winning gingerbread house he created at the Pine Run Community Center. Fogel’s creation captured the Grand Prize in Flik Hospitality’s national gingerbread contest.

Pine Run’s grand prize-winning submission is a remarkable multi-story house, surrounded by handcrafted trees, plants, and shrubbery. Designed and built by David Fogel, Pine Run’s senior director of dining services, the building’s gingerbread and candy exteriors are entirely edible, secured together with over 40 lbs. of royal icing and covered in confections of every kind.

“The gingerbread house project is a Pine Run holiday tradition that residents, villagers, associates, and guests look forward to each year,” said Fogel. “It is a pleasure to be recognized with the top prizes in this national contest.”

Sharon Smith, director of dining services at Pine Run’s Lakeview personal care residence, started building a gingerbread display at Pine Run in 1985. Over the years, many individuals have worked to complete the gingerbread display. This year, Smith created a snowy cathedral complete with steeple, dripping in white icing, stained glass windows, draped with sugary evergreen boughs, and flanked by snowy trees and a frozen pond. Her cathedral used 30 lbs. of sugar and seven dozen egg whites.

Sharon Smith, director of dining services at Pine Run’s Lakeview personal care residence, stands with the prize-winning gingerbread cathedral she created. Smith’s creation captured Second Prize in Flik Hospitality’s national gingerbread contest.

“I look at old Thomas Kinkade Christmas cards and old churches,” said Smith. “Then I sit down with a ruler, box cutter, foam board, and start building.” The church is 37″ tall and lights up! “Sharing this treasured holiday tradition with everyone at Pine Run is a highlight of our year,” continued Smith. “We love the smiles that the display sparks on people’s faces.”

“It is wonderful to see our associates being recognized for their passion and dedication to their work,” said Pine Run Executive Director Maria Santangelo. “Our dining team uses their creativity and attention to detail to outdo themselves every year with the gingerbread display, and we are proud of their incredible talent.”
