Pine Run Retirement Community Exhibits Scenic and Costume Designs by Henry Heymann, through October 22

Costume designs for Christopher Marlowe’s “Doctor Faustus,” by Henry Heymann

DOYLESTOWN, PA. (October 3, 2022) – Pine Run Retirement Community and its Villagers Association are pleased to present an exhibit of scenic and costume designs by Pine Run resident and scenic designer Henry Heymann. The exhibit will be on view between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the lower level of the Pine Run Community Center, 777 Ferry Road in Doylestown, through October 22, 2022.

Mr. Heymann’s long and distinguished career in design includes a resume of over 400 shows in theaters, operas, and ballets throughout the US including New York City, Santa Fe Opera, and the University of Pittsburgh, where he taught (and designed) from 1967 to 1992. The Pine Run exhibit, a colorful feast for the eyes, showcases 70 sketches from 20 of these works, as well as original sketches from his 1960 application to join the United Scenic Artists Union in New York City.

The United Scenic Artists exam, a prerequisite for designers who wish to work in New York City is a grueling, often feared, project consisting of sketches of costumes, scenery, and lighting from a play. In Mr. Heymann’s project the topic was Christopher Marlowe’s “Dr. Faustus” and it consisted of 18 items representing 14 scene and 75 characters and costumes. Applicants have one month to complete their projects before sitting for a nine hour exam. Most applicants use every minute of that month to complete their work. Mr. Heymann completed his project in just one short week and was one of only a few applicants to pass, out of 44 entrants that year.

Pine Run Retirement Community Dedicates ‘Never Forget’ Garden to Honor Veterans

Bucks County senior living community joins nationwide movement to create a space to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served in the military

Tom Barnett stands in Pine Run’s Never Forget Garden with his daughters Lisa Barnett, Carol Rorbaugh, son-in-law Mark Rorbaugh, and Donna Blizzard.

DOYLESTOWN, PA. (November 2021): – Pine Run Retirement Community marked Veterans Day 2021 with several events, including the dedication of a “Never Forget Garden,” part of a nationwide initiative to plant gardens and place specially made markers to recognize, remember and honor U.S. veterans.

Part of the Doylestown Health network, Pine Run every year honors veterans who live at each of its locations: independent living at The Village, personal care at Pine Run Lakeview, and skilled nursing and memory care at The Pine Run Health Center. Veterans were honored at a special recognition breakfast held on Veterans Day at each location.

“From our annual veterans’ breakfasts to the veterans’ memorial at The Village to the Military Order of Pine Run, we are all committed to pausing to recognize the service and sacrifice of our Pine Run residents and associates who served in the military,” said Maria Santangelo, Executive Director of Pine Run Retirement Community. “We thank them for their dedication and devotion on Veterans Day and every day.”

This year’s Veterans Day festivities included the unveiling of the community’s new Never Forget Garden. Pine Run resident Thomas J. Barnett, a veteran, first approached Pine Run administrators about the Never Forget Garden in 2019. Barnett served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from 1953 to 1954 and is a life member of the tomb’s Society of the Honor Guard, which first proposed the nationwide Never Forget Garden project.

“The Never Forget Garden is really based on the Tomb guards’ motto,” said Barnett. “We have a motto that says, ‘A soldier never dies until he is forgotten. Tomb guards never forget.’”
